OUR HISTORY - a Family Tradition
In September of 1969, Butch and Von Coombs established Coombs Gas, Co. in Blue Mountain, Mississippi with just a $10,000 loan from their local bank.
Butch was already familiar with the propane industry as his father and uncle owned and established Coombs Bros. Gas where both he and Von worked before his family sold the business. Afterwards, Butch continued his work in the propane industry in Bruce, Mississippi, where he managed the local Empire Gas office. After some time, Butch and Von decided to give it their own go and opened up shop in Blue Mountain.
With one truck, one phone, and one another, they were ready for business. They used that $10,000 loan to rent a small office at 109 South Guyton Blvd in Blue Mountain, MS and purchase their first gas truck. Propane was selling for a record .16 cents per gallon at that time and their first sales receipt can be seen in their office today.
With Von answering the phone and Butch hauling gas, they were on the move. Hard work has never been a stranger to either of them, and there was plenty of hard work to go around during the early years. They continued to persevere and turned the company into the successful business it is today.
Coombs Gas is still located in the same building on Guyton Blvd where it all began, however, the office has grown and now consumes what was previously a neighboring restaurant, barbershop, laundry mat, pool hall, optometry office, and pharmacy.
Today, we proudly serve customers across Mississippi and Tennessee. With four generations of Coombs in the propane industry, the future looks promising.
