How Do I Know When My Propane Tanks Needs a Refill?
Propane is known for its versatility, and it has many benefits over alternative fuels! However, it can be difficult knowing when it is time to refill your propane tank. Keep reading for tips on how to know when it’s time to refill your tank and avoid running low on propane in the future.
Your Gauge is Low
All propane tanks should come with a gauge that shows the approximate amount of propane left inside the tank. This allows you to easily monitor your tank levels and see when you are running low on fuels! If the needle is below the halfway mark, or approaching 20% of the tank’s overall capacity, it is time to schedule a refill.
Propane tanks should never be filled over 80-85% capacity, to allow for fluctuations in hot and cold temperatures. Knowing how to read the gauge on your propane tank is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to determine when you need a tank refill!
Your Tank is Light in Weight
While this may not be the most accurate measurement, for smaller propane tanks such as grill cylinders that may not have a gauge, you can check the weight of your tank to determine when you may need a refill! When picking up propane, you are moving the weight of the metal tank and the liquid propane inside.
When your tank is full, it is usually pretty difficult to move. But if it is running low, it should be pretty easy to pick up. Make sure you turn off the gas supply before disconnecting the hose from the tank, then carefully pick up the propane tank using two hands.
If the tank feels light, then it is time for a refill! If it feels heavy, you can wait a bit longer and weigh it again after a few more uses.
A Steady Flame is Not Present
A weak or flickering flame is usually another indicator that it is time for a tank refill. There must be a steady flow of propane in order for your appliances to continue working properly, so when your tank is low, your appliances won’t get the fuel they need until you refill your tank!
Your Propane Tank Fails the Hot Water Test
For small grill propane tanks without a gauge, all you need to test your propane levels is a pot of boiling water!
To perform a hot water test on your tank, turn off your propane and disconnect your hose from the tank while the water is boiling. Once your water is boiling, take the pot outside and pour some of the water on the side of the propane tank.
Above the propane level, the metal will be warm to the touch, and below the propane level, the metal will be cool to the touch. Of course this is not the most accurate method, but it works well enough to let you know whether you are in need of a refill.
